At the end of the XVII century, Mechanics was the Innovation. Two hundred years later, the Electronics was the Innovation. And in 1960, the Photonics is presented to the world as a new paradigm, complementing and subverting the previous models, making it the essential Innovation for sustainable development of the centuries to follow.
In this context, the iTech, Photonics Innovation Institute, acts. It brings to the real world, with practical actions, the true meaning of the word Innovation.
Based on the Development of Technological Innovations in Professional Training, and Certification and Calibration of Products and Equipment, the iTech innovates as it offers to the market a combination of feasible ways that contributes to the country's economic growth.

iTech is a private non-profit organization created to conduct and support research activities, development and innovation in the field of Photonics.
The embryonic process of creating the Photonics Innovation Institute - iTech began in 1995 with the support of FAPESP (Proc. 95/09510-1), through the establishment of an emerging center of R & D in optical fibers. In the period 2002 to 2003, very accurate initiatives in the metropolitan region of Campinas, such as the foundation of the Association of Technology AET and the Brazil Photonics Group, equally preconized the needing of the expansion of that knowledge objectively directed to the design of cooperative's organizational structures dedicated to basic and applied research, focused on the Brazilian photonics industrial self-sustaining chain. Thus was formed in 2006 the Photonics Innovation Institute - iTech not only with the task of conducting researchs of industrial relevance but rather to establish itself as an inexhaustible source of qualified human enabling with national know-how.
The photonic universe, that deals with photons, includes subareas as fiber optics, lasers, displays, optoelectronics, optical processing, and also all the practical applications of these elements: optical communications (telecommunications), photonic computing (information technology), medical equipments dental by laser (medicine and dentistry), optical instruments and sensors for aeronautics (avionics), space, oil and automotive (instrumentation), industrial lasers, etc.
Briefly, photonics emerges inexorably as the dominant technology of the future, either by the magnitude and diversity around their applicability as for its economic potential that shall greatly boost the whole business inherent to the domain and unfolding of optical communications.
In this context, the Photonics Innovation Institute has been dedicated to the development of science & technology photonics notedly through the acomplishment of technology cooperation agreements with private companies and public institutions such as the Brazilian Center for Physics Research CBPF / MCT, Optics and Photonics Research Center (CePOF - Unicamp), Institute of Physics of Unicamp and Kyatera Project / FAPESP.
Finally, it should be emphasized that iTech is primarily engaged in the development of technological innovations using photonics to create solutions for the productive sector. Therefore, it has distinct features of the newly created INCT Photonics for Optical Communications, academic institution which focuses on the study and advancement of basic photonics science, generating results as scientific articles, post-graduate theses and training of scientific personal.
Main Research and Development fields:
1 )Optical Telecom (Optical Fibers, systems, FTTx, new technologies);
2) Biophotonic( lasers in medical sciences / biology, photodynamics, etc);
3) Silicon Photonic( new lasers tecnologies, waveguides, resonators, new material baseded on Silicon);
4) Photometry / Ilumination (LED, displays, oLED).
The Photonic Innovation Institute has a technical team consisting of analysts, teachers, doctors and external consultants, besides a close partnership with others ICTs and sector companies.
The iTech's research platform was originally conceived from the identification of development niche and technological capabilities demanded by the Brazilian industrial sector of photonics.
The installed capacity to conduct applied research in photonics and telecommunications has R & D state-of-art equipments, among which are: signal amplifiers, multi-lasers' sources, optical workbench of high stability, chromatic dispersion's analysis equipment, optical power meters, gauges of dependent loss polarization's, tunable lasers and digital signal generators, among others.
Thus, on what is confered to the practical sense of systematic's cooperations and R & D's activities routinised, the Photonics Innovation Institute has technical-scientific agreements with other institutes, universities and companies where are shared equipment and material resources for the implementation of technology projects in the photonics field. Therein, are:
• Optics and Photonics Research Center (CePOF - Unicamp)
• Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF - Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation)
• Brazilian Association of Informatics (ABINFO)
• Kyatera Project (Fapesp - Foundation for Research Support of São Paulo State)
• FiberWork Optical Communicatios (Campinas, SP)
Certification of Optical Communication Products
The iTech's Laboratory of Calibration and Certification performs product certification services / telecommunications equipment.
The laboratory's focus are assays on equipment for optical networks and on passive optical devices.
Performed Assays
- Trials for certification along ANATEL of optical networking equipments that use technologies PDH, SDH, GPON and WDM.
- Trials for certification along Anatel of passive optical devices such as connectors and optical couplers.
- Advisement for businesses that require suit their products to the Brazilian legislation.
- Homologation of products for telecom operators.
- Performance tests.
Instruments' Calibration
The calibration of equipments has international standards providing reliability on the measurement traced and accuracy on the productive processes. The calibration of measuring equipment is an important function to ensure and guarantee measured results suitable to the national and international principles. The scope of the laboratory is described below:
Opticals
- Optical Power Meter
- Optical Attenuator
- Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)
- Wavelength Standard (Visible, Band C, Band L)
Time and Frequency
- Time-Interval Generator
- Time-Interval Meter
- Frequency Measurement
- Frequency Generator
- Frequency Meter
The Photonics Innovation Insitute disposes of testing and calibration laboratories for certification and product development, which are available to the national and international technological society.
The calibration and certification services of Itech follow national and international standards of quality in accordance with the requirements of ISO / IEC 17025.
The laboratory counts on a team of professionals with high technical capacity and laboratory infrastructure capable of providing high quality service.
All collaborators have the knowledge of the secret nature of the work, which is also formalized by confidentiality agreements. Thus, the iTech seeks to ensure intellectual property rights and the correct confidential treatment to the rendered services.
The scarceness of qualified professionals in the areas of Technological Development, Engineering Photonics, Optoelectronic, Fiber Optics and Optical Communications has been one of the major bottleneck for the national evolution of the optical communications. This bottleneck is even more restrictive when it takes into account that education focuses on theoretical knowledge, leaving on the second plan the practical application of them.
Complementing the academic forming, the iTech offers theoretical and practical courses of different levels, allowing the professionals experience the challenges of everyday life and learn to solve real problems they will encounter in business.
The iTech also offers courses focusing on technological entrepreneurship, such as Technology Marketing, Product Engineering, Internationalization of Technological Enterprises, Human Resource Management for High Technology, Quality Management, Financial Management for R & D Projects, Intellectual Property, Product's Homologation in Brazil and abroad, among others.
